The organic movement, which remains as a major landmark in the history of agriculture, actually began in the 1930s and 1940s.
The origin of International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements was established in order to protest against agriculture's increasing dependence on synthetic fertilizers and unfair methods of cultivating practiced by the people of that era. With the emergence of various methods of agriculture like crop rotation and integrated pest management, various movements came up as a voice of protest against the ruthless killing of land productivity of the farmers. The Organic Agriculture Movements aimed at making the world aware of the rising degradation of our land resources and to make them realize the need for an eco-friendly method of agriculture. The Federation also took the initiative to show the relevance of Organic Agriculture in the present agricultural system. The founders of this organization hoped to create a healthy ambiance by banishing the use of such harmful chemicals during farming.
The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements discovered its first specimen in Versailles, France, on November 5, 1972, when an international congress on organic agriculture was organized by the French farmer organization. The world, for the first time felt the uprising of the movement. IFOAM felt the need exchanging information between national and regional organic movements as a matter of prime importance. Keeping in mind the need of the economically developed nations and the developing countries, these movements tried to lay down certain norms and conventions which were to be abided by the people. When the whole world was supporting the creation of artificial fertilizers, IFOAM took the initiative to make the world understand the demolition which these artificial chemicals can cause.
The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements has two reputed members like, Organic Trade Association and Organic Crop Improvement, which share the common aim of leading, uniting and assisting the organic movement throughout the world. They aim at making the world adopt the ecologically, socially and economically friendly systems of Agriculture. In the list of activities, IFOAM is known for maintaining an organic farming standard apart from an organic certification service. IFOAM is also credited with created an Internet Training Platform which offers free access to high quality training materials and training programs on Organic Agriculture. The modern Organic farming still depends a lot on this organization. Those who believe that our land resources can be revived and organic farming must be practiced all over the world, follow the trends set down by this federation.
